About the Inspiration for the Beginner Triangle Crochet Shawl Pattern
A triangular shawl can be perfect when you want an extra bit of warmth to keep on hand nearly any time of year. The triangle shape drapes across your back and the ends wrap around your shoulders. Or wear the triangle portion of the shawl in front for another styling options.
The construction though can be a bit more challenging than a simple rectangular shawl. So I wanted a beautiful triangular shawl that would still be easy to make for those just learning to crochet. With that in mind, I chose a stitch pattern that only requires basic stitches.
One row of the pattern is simply a series of double crochet stitches. The other row uses a slight variation by grouping the double crochet stitches together and then skipping a stitch.
Contrasted with the previous row, the two row repeat creates a lovely simple and stylish look. You’ll love this pattern if you are making your first triangle shawl.
The crochet wrap is also a project an experienced crocheter can enjoy when they want to relax. With this pattern, you can have a beautiful shawl finished in no time. It’s a perfect project for last-minute gifts or if you want to make shawls for a prayer shawl group or to donate.
About the Yarn
I chose Lion Brand Mandala Ombre for the sample shawl. I’m such a fan of ombre yarns. They do all the color changing work for you.
A great thing about Lion Brand Ombre is that it has long stretches of color that blend into each other. This worked great for the triangle shawl. Because the rows get longer as you go further along, the long changes between the different colors were perfect.
The yarn is a dream to work with. It glides through the hook very easily. It doesn’t split. And you don’t get bored when you’re crocheting with Mandala Ombre. There’s always a color change coming up around the corner.
It’s also machine washable and dryable. This makes it a great choice for a shawl that may get a lot of use. You won’t have to worry giving a shawl made with this yarn as a gift. You’ll know the recipient will be able to wash it easily
Beginner Triangle Shawl Crochet Pattern
Crochet Supplies
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (#4 Medium) in colors of your choice approximately 688 yards.
Shown: Lion Brand Mandala Ombre (100% acrylic), 344yd[315m]/5.3oz[150g]: #202 (Mantra), 2 skeins.
Hook: Size J/10 (6.0 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge (these are my favorite crochet hooks).
Notions: Tapestry needle, 2 optional stitch markers, tape measure.
Sizing and Gauge
Size: 55” wide x 37” deep.
Gauge: 11 sts x 7 rows in dc = 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm).
Pattern Notes
- Find a video tutorial for the magic loop which is also sometimes called the magic ring at this post on the magic loop method.
- Ch 3 at beginning of each row counts as a dc.
- Pay particular attention to edge sts to make sure there is a ch 3 and a dc in the beginning st and 2 dc in the ending st.
- Use optional stitch markers to mark edge sts and move up as you work.
- The pattern uses two skeins of Lion Brand Mandala Ombre. When you think about which skein to start with and which to end with, look at what colors will be at the start of the skein and at the end of the skein. Start with a color that you will enjoy for the center of the shawl. And for the second skein, pick a skein that ends with a color that you want for the bottom of your shawl.

Beginner Triangle Crochet Shawl Pattern
Begin with magic loop.
Row 1: Ch 3, work 4 dc in magic loop, ch 2, work 5 dc in magic loop. Tighten magic loop. Turn. (10 dc, 1 ch-2 sp)
Row 2 (solid dc row): Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each st to ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in center ch-2 sp, dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in top of beg ch-3. Turn. (See stitch count table at end of this blog post for the stitch count for row 2 and beyond.)
Row 3 (clustered dc row): Ch 3, dc in same st, sk st, *2 dc in next st, sk st*; rep from * to * to ch-2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, sk st; rep from * to * to last st, 2 dc in top of beg ch-3. Turn.
Rows 4 to 39: Rep rows 2 and 3.
Row 40: Rep row 2. Fasten off.
Finishing: Weave in ends. Block if desired.
How to Crochet a Triangle Shawl for Beginners (Step by Step Photo Tutorial)
This is a step by step photo tutorial for how to crochet a triangle shawl for beginners.
Instructions
Note: Each row adds six more double crochet stitches to the total stitch count. The italicized notes indicate where these stitches are added.
1. Begin with a magic loop. Find a video tutorial for how to make the magic loop here.
2. Begin row one. Chain three.
3. Work four double crochet stitches in the magic loop.
4. Chain two and work five double crochet stitches in the magic loop.
5. Tighten the magic loop.
6. Turn.
7. Begin row two. Chain three and double crochet in the same stitch. Note: This adds one additional stitch at the beginning of the row.
8. Double crochet in each stitch to the chain two space.
9. Work two double crochet stitches, chain two, and two more double crochet stitches in the center chain two space. Note: This adds four stitches in the center of the shawl.
10. Double crochet in each stitch to the last stitch.
11. Work two double crochet stitches in the top of the beginning chain three. Note: This adds one additional stitch at the end of the row.
12. Turn.
13. Begin row three. Chain three and double crochet in the same stitch. Note: This adds one additional stitch at the beginning of the row.
14. Skip stitch, work two double crochets in the next stitch, skip stitch.
15. Repeat the instructions to work two double crochet stitches in the next stitch and skip a stitch until you reach the center chain two space.
16. Work three doubles crochet stitches, chain two, and three more double crochets in the center chain two space. Note: This adds four stitches in the center of the shawl. Because you are crocheting three double crochet stitches, chain two, and three more double crochet stitches in the center of the clustered double crochet rows, it may seem like you are adding six stitches in the center of the shawl. However, the two additional double crochet stitches in the center here do not add to the total stitch count for the row. They help make up for the extra skipped stitch that is included in the clustered double crochet row pattern.
17. Repeat the instructions to work two double crochets in next stitch and skip a stitch until you reach the last stitch.
18. Work two double crochet stitches in the top of the beginning chain three. Note: This adds one additional stitch at the end of the row.
19. Turn.
20. Next row. Repeat row two instructions.
21. Turn. And for next row, repeat row three instructions.
22. Keep repeating rows two and three until you have completed row thirty-nine. Then, repeat row two one more time. Fasten off. Weave in the ends. Enjoy your finished shawl.
