Whip up some cheery placemats to brighten your table with this free crochet oval placemat pattern. These placemats work up quickly and easily in worsted weight yarn.
Make a set all in the same color. Or, vary the colors for a fun table setting.
This is a great stash busting project too. You can make one placemat with about 130 yards of yarn.
If you have some extra stash, you could make a coordinating set with each placemat being a different color. Or, change colors at the beginning of the rounds for multi-colored placemats.

Advanced beginners will love this pattern.
You’ll start with a base chain. Then, you work around it in oval shaped rounds.
The increases are simple to do. And, a couple of rounds allow you to try some basic crochet open work to add a decorative touch.
About the Inspiration for the Crochet Oval Placemat Pattern
I wanted to design something that could work both for indoors and outdoors eating or even going to the beach. Originally my idea was to make them in red, white, and blue for celebrating Fourth of July in an outdoor picnic.
I think they’d be fun to make in a variety of colors. The decorative openwork is simple so you can use these for both a casual or dressier table setting.
About the Yarn
For my sample placemats, I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling in Royal Blue and White.
I love this yarn for a good worsted weight acrylic. It’s soft, easy to use, and it holds up well.
I can also easily find it at my local craft store or online. I do think it runs a bit on the lighter side of worsted so I used an H hook for this pattern.
