About the Inspiration for the Quick Bucket Hat Pattern
Now that’s it’s summer, I’ve been seeing bucket hats everywhere. I thought wouldn’t it be fun to crochet your own popular high fashion item. The idea was to make a quick project to whip something up for warm weather and summer days.
I also wanted a pattern where you can give it a bit of your personal style. For all but the smallest baby size, you can choose to stop and make a narrow brim. Or keep going to give it a wide brim.
Style the hat by wearing the brim down or turned up. Most of my testers chose to make their hats in a solid color.
You could also try variegated yarn. Or change colors to give your hat stripes or blocks of colors.
About the Yarn
The sample red and blue bucket hats are made with WeCrochet/KnitPicks Dishie. Dishie is a wonderful cotton yarn for the hats.
It has a nice tight spin and a soft texture. It works up well to make the hats flexible while still holding their shape. It’s also affordably priced like many yarns from WeCrochet/KnitPicks.
The white sample hat is made with Lily Sugar’n Cream in white. This worsted weight 100% cotton yarn also works well for the hats.
You can easily pick it up at many craft stores in the United States. It has a slightly looser spin. This still works well for the hats.
You could also use another worsted weight cotton yarn. I recommend cotton because it will breathe well. And it has a little bit of stiffness which works great for a bucket hat.
As long as you can meet the gauge, you are welcome to try other fibers like acrylic yarn or other fiber blends. The color choice is up to you.
For other projects that use Dishie, check out the Shell Stitch Market Bag Pattern and the Iris Stitch Washcloth Pattern. Both of these patterns are available for free on the blog.

Sizing and Gauge

Finished Measurements: approximately 12 (13.5, 15, 17.5, 18.5, 21, 22, 23)” in circumference at crown
Gauge: Hat crown should be 3.5” in diameter at end of rnd 3.
Pattern Notes
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning your hat. Choose the size you want to make and follow the instructions for that particular size.
- The ages for baby and children’s hats are approximate. Head sizes vary. To get the best fit, go by the head size in inches of the recipient rather than by the age.
- Join each round with a slip stitch before going to next round.
- Beginning chains of each round do not count as stitches – tutorial available at this post on beginning chains. These beginning chains create extra stitches that don’t count as a stitch in order to maintain shape of hat.
- Do not turn work. Use optional marker to keep track of your rounds. Use it to indicate the first stitch of every round (not the beginning chains) and reposition marker as needed.
- Invisible join method recommended for fastening off. Photo tutorial available at this post on the invisible join method.
- Full video tutorial available for making stitches at the beginning of a round “in same stitch” at this post on working in the same stitch.
- Tutorial on how to crochet in the back loop only (blo) at this post on the back loop only method in crochet.
- Go down a hook size by switching to the smaller hook for the last two rounds of the brim if desired to make the edge of the brim slightly stiff.
- Hat sizes are noted in pattern based on the crown circumference in inches. When sizes receive different instructions, the information for each size will be written as 12 (13.5, 15, 17.5, 18.5, 21, 22, 23). For example the Main Body Pattern has an instruction that states: Rep rnd 3 another 3 (3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6) more times. This means round 3 is to be repeated 3 times for sizes 12, 13.5, and 15; repeated 4 times for size 17.5; repeated 5 times for sizes 18.5, 21, 22; and repeated 6 times for size 23.
- Some instructions are only for certain sizes and this will be written for example as “Size 13.5 only.”
