The Lauren Square is a wavy crochet square pattern designed for the Friendship Blanket Crochet Along (CAL). I’ve always loved the ocean. For awhile I even got to live within biking distance of the beach.
The wavy texture in this square reminds me of the ripples in ocean waves. Inspired by the friendship theme of the CAL, I named this square after one of my friends from that time.

The ripply texture makes this a squishy and warm square. You’ll mostly use basic stitches to make the square plus the single crochet back loop only stitch.
About the Inspiration for the Wavy Crochet Square Pattern
I had already been playing around with this wavy stitch pattern for a security baby blanket. When the Friendship Blanket CAL was getting organized, this stitch also seemed perfect for one of the squares.
I’m hoping those who love the ocean will enjoy making this square and seeing it in their finished blankets or other projects. So, if you’d like to bring a little bit of ripply texture to one of your projects, try out this free wavy crochet square pattern.
About the Yarn
For my sample square, I used some Red Heart Super Saver Ombre that I had leftover from other projects. I purposefully began the square at a point in the skein where I knew there would be a gradual color change.
If you love ombre effects, this is a super fun yarn for playing around with gradual color changes. I’ve used it for several security blanket patterns in different colorways.
