It’s the 11th anniversary of the Crochet Cancer Challenge! I’m honored to participate for my third year.
My design this year honors those fighting esophogeal and ovarian cancer. I wanted to find a yarn this year that contained colors representing the ribbons of both of these cancers. The multi-colored yarn in the sample hat beautifully blends both blue-purple and teal, the colors for the ribbons for both cancers.
Having lost my Dad to esophogeal cancer and my mother-in-law and grandmother to ovarian cancer, I thought of them and all our family as I was designing and making the sample hats.
I am looking forward to wearing my hat this winter and thinking about them. And I have a second hat that I can give away!

The Marin Beanie is worked top down in continuous rounds. The stitches are simple as well. This should make it a quick and easy project. And there are only two ends to weave in.

About the Inspiration for the Marin Beanie Pattern
I began thinking about this design during the spring when I was visiting my Mom. There’s a local yarn store there that I love.
I decided to look for a yarn that combined the shades of purple and green that I wanted to use to represent the ribbons for both cancers. That’s where I saw the Malabrigo yarn and treated myself to two skeins for experimenting.
The yarn itself then inspired the stitches I used. Because it’s so gorgeous and multi-colored, more simple stitches made sense for the design. And I loved how the yarn looked and worked in both the shorter single crochet and longer double crochet.
I also knew I wanted to do a top down design again this year. I did one last year, and I found it to be an easy way to work the hat. Having settled on the simpler stitches, I thought the hat would also benefit from being easy to make.
About the Yarn
The Malabrigo Washted is a lustrous squishy yarn. It’s a super soft wool. I don’t normally wear wool. This yarn is so soft that I think I’ll be able to wear the hat this winter.
I loved how the colors changed when working it. For me, the color changes make working the project especially interesting. The hat doesn’t get boring because you’re always waiting to see what color is coming next.
Other yarns will work as well. Any worsted weight yarn works great, and you can see some of the other options through the color and yarn choices of the testers below.
Tester Projects
The testers for the pattern were rock stars! They all got back to me quickly and with great feedback! One of the most fun things about designing is seeing the pattern in all the different color and yarn choices. Which is your favorite?

Pattern Notes
- Hat is worked from the top down and in continuous rounds. When working in continuous rounds, do not use a slip stitch to join before going to the next round.
- It is recommended to use the stitch marker to mark the first st of each rnd and move the marker up as you go along. This will aid in keeping track of where each new round is to begin.
- Adjust the hat’s height by subtracting or adding to the number of rounds in the repeat section.
- It is more important to get the height you desire than to meet the round counts. Feel free to subtract or add to the number of rounds in the repeat section to adjust the height. For the Adult Small size, the adjustments can be made in rounds 10 – 19. For the Adult Medium size, the adjustments can be made in rounds 11 – 20.
