Quick and Chunky Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

The V-st is easy to master. After a few rows, you can relax as the pattern repeats and the blanket quickly grows in size. This is a great project for grabbing while watching your favorite show. The size is easily adjustable too if you’d like to make a larger blanket.

About the Inspiration for the Quick and Chunky Crochet Baby Blanket Design

The inspiration for this design came both from the yarn and wanting to make a quick and easy baby blanket pattern. As I was walking through the aisles at my local craft store, I was drawn to the Grey Ragg colorway in the Bernat Softee Chunky yarn. It seemed perfect for creating visual interest in a baby blanket while still being in soft colors. I also loved that it was in a neutral colorway that would work with lots of different decors. And, the yarn is soft and machine washable. It gets even softer after washing.

With the yarn in hand, the stitch choice came next. The V-st worked great with the chunky yarn, creating a soft and squishy fabric that wasn’t too stiff. And, the chunkiness of the yarn minimized the gaps between the stitches.

About the Yarn

The Bernat Softee Chunky yarn turned out to be perfect for this blanket. It worked up quick and is super soft. In the Grey Ragg colorway it creates a mottled overall color effect that adds depth and works as a great neutral for many different decors.

Bernat Baby Blanket would be another great yarn choice for this blanket. It is the same weight as the Softee Chunky. And, it’s designed specifically for baby blankets. It’s also super soft and comes in many different colors so you can tailor the blanket to match your favorite colors.

Quick and Chunky Crochet Baby Blanket

What You’ll Need

Yarn:  Super bulky yarn (#6) in color of choice.  Approximately 400 yards.

Shown above:  Bernat Softee Chunky (100% acrylic), 108yds [99m]/3.5 oz [100g]:  Yarn A #28047 (Grey Ragg), 4 skeins. 

Hook:  Size N/13 (9.0mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

Sizing and Gauge

Size:  One size, approximately 22” x 28” including border.

Gauge: 8 sts and 7.5 rows = 4” in pattern.

• Placing markers on the edge stitches is recommended for keeping track of the edge stitches. 
• Work the base chain loosely.

ch:  chain

ch = chain

st(s) = stitch(es)

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

pm = place marker

rep = repeat

V-st = (sc, ch 2, sc) in same stitch

Quick and Chunky Baby Blanket Pattern

Multiple:  2 sts + 1, plus 1 for base chain.

Base Chain:  Loosely ch 40 + 1 +1 (or adjust base chain to desired width of blanket).

Row 1:  Hdc in 2^nd ch from hook (pm in this hdc), *V-st in next ch, skip ch; rep from * to last 2 ch, V-st in second to last ch, hdc in last ch, turn. (2 hdc and 20 V-st)

Row 2:  Ch 1 loosely (does not count as a stitch), hdc in hdc (pm in this hdc), *V-st in next ch-2 space; rep from * to end of row, hdc in last hdc, turn. (2 hdc and 20 V-st)

Rows 3 – 50: Rep row 2.

At the end of row 50, turn and continue to BORDER.

BORDER

Rnd 1:  Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), work 3 sc into last hdc of Row 50 of BLANKET, pm in the middle sc of the three to mark the corner, continue working sc stitches around the BLANKET in the following manner:  work 50 sc evenly spaced along both sides, 39 sc evenly spaced along both top and bottom edges, and 3 sc in each corner placing a marker in the middle sc of each corner to mark the corner, at end of round join with sl st to first sc of Rnd 1, turn.

Rnd 2:  Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in same stitch, continue working sc stitches around BLANKET in the following manner:  work 3 sc in each marked corner stitch from Rnd 1 and work 1 sc in each sc from Rnd 1.  At end of Rnd 2, either join with a sl st to first sc and fasten off or if you would like an invisible looking join, use the invisible join method to finish Rnd 2 instead.  Tutorial for invisible join here.
