The crochet hat pattern is adjustable with instructions for four sizes including Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large, and Adult XL. Bonus instructions are also included for super bulky yarn.
By using the technique of working the stitches in the back loop, the hat pattern will help you create a hat with a stylish and modern texture. This technique also helps avoid the gaps that can occur when working stitches using bulky yarn.
The hat is reversible too. The inside of the hat has a slightly different look than the outside. There is no right side to this hat. So pick the side you prefer. Or switch it up each time you wear it!
PDF Pattern: This pattern is included in full in this blog post. You can also get the PDF in my shops.
About the Yarn
This pattern is designed for bulky weight yarn (#5). You might also see this yarn called chunky yarn, craft yarn, or rug yarn. The brown and cream sample hat pattern is made in Lion Brand Scarfie.
Bulky yarn is a little bit thicker and heavier than worsted weight yarn. So it lends itself to a crochet beanie pattern that is warm and fast to make. You get the instant gratification of seeing your hat grow quickly in size.
You can also use the notes below to adjust for super bulky weight yarn (#6) like Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick or Lion Brand Hometown.

About the Inspiration for the Bulky Crochet Hat Pattern
I was thinking about a hat that would look great while using bulky yarn – something stylish that would also be easy to make.
After playing around with lots of stitches, I was unsatisfied with how some stitch patterns left gaps in the work when using chunky yarns. How to make easy hats with in a quick yarn?
I finally settled on the single crochet back loop only stitch. It’s simple to make and remember. And working in the back loop helped avoid those gaps found with other stitches.

- Invisible join method recommended for fastening off. Tutorial on invisible join method.
- As an alternative, you can also start round one with a magic ring. You would then work the six single crochet stitches in round one into the magic ring. Tutorial on magic ring including step by step video tutorial.
