These coasters feature the herringbone half double crochet stitch. This stitch lends itself to making the coaster centers smooth and sturdy. Then, a decorative shell border adds a pretty detail. This is a great pattern for using up scrap yarn. You only need about 100 yards of two different colors in dk weight yarn to make a set of four coasters.

BORDER PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
Rnd 1: 2 sc in same st (pm in first sc to mark corner), work 13 sc evenly spaced across top edge, 3 sc in corner (pm in middle sc to mark corner), 13 sc evenly spaced down side (see note below), 3 sc in corner (pm in middle sc to mark corner), 13 sc evenly spaced across bottom edge, 3 sc in corner (pm in middle sc to mark corner), 13 sc evenly spaced up side, 1 sc in first st, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Note About Working Into Row-End Herr-Hdc: When working into the row-end herr-hd, work the stitches into the actual herr-hdc stitches and not the spaces in between the sts. If the row-end has the ch-2 loosely, skip over this and work the stitches into the actual herr-hdc stitches and not the ch-2 loosely. This technique will reduce the size of the “gaps” on the edges and help create a cleaner and more uniform finish.
Rnd 2: Turn coaster over. Join CC with a sl st 4 sts before any corner (see photo below for stitch placement), ch 1, sc in same stitch, work 1 sc in each sc around and [sc ch2 sc] in each corner st (move markers up to mark ch-2 sps), join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, work 1 sc in each sc around and [sc ch2 sc] in each corner st (move markers up), join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, skip st, *[5 dc in next st, skip st, sc in next stitch, skip st] to corner, 5 dc in corner ch-2 sp, skip st, sc in next st, skip st; rep from * 3 more times, then repeat [5 dc in next st, skip st, sc in next stitch, skip st] to last 2 st, 5 dc in next st, skip st, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Finishing: Weave in ends. Block if desired.
