The Victoria Square is a textured granny square pattern designed for the Friendship Blanket Crochet Along (CAL). When Sunflower Cottage Crochet was looking for additional squares for the CAL, I was excited to offer another textured crochet square. My first square, the Lauren Square, is worked in rows. This one, the Victoria Square, is worked from the center out in a textured take on the granny square pattern.
Since this is an adaptation of the granny square, I named it “Victoria” after one of my grandmothers. My grandma Victoria passed away when I was still young (younger than my kids are today). I don’t have a lot of memories of her. When I think of her, I remember how loving she was to us as grandchildren, how much fun it was to visit there as kids, play on their swing-set, and how she and my Papa just delighted in spoiling us. Seriously, my Papa would buy enough food to feed us for a month when we visited! If you are reading this, is there someone you can spoil today?

The post stitches in this square give it a rich and squishy texture. It’s a bit of work to do the post stitches. I’ve included a video below for the first three rounds if working post stitches is new to you.
About the Inspiration for the Textured Granny Square Pattern
I had already been playing around with squares for the Friendship Blanket CAL. When Sunflower Cottage Crochet was look for additional square, this adaptation on a granny square seemed like a perfect fit.
About the Yarn
For my sample square, I used Caron Cotton Cakes in Rose Whisper that I had in my stash. If you’ve been around my designs for anytime, you’ll know I love yarns that do the color changing work for you. And, this Caron Cotton Cake does just that. In the Rose Whisper colorway, I also felt it had a vintage-modern feel for my granny square design. I really do love how soft the Caron Cotton Cakes are! Cotton and acrylic blends like these are so beautifully suited to crochet.

Pattern Notes
Notes:
- Tutorials are available for the following stitches and techniques:
- fpdc – tutorial at https://craftingeachday.com/fpdc/
- invisible join – tutorial at https://craftingeachday.com/crochet-invisible-join-tutorial-crochet-in-the-round/
- magic loop – tutorial at https://craftingeachday.com/magic-loop-tutorial/
- Fptr is worked similar to fpdc using a treble crochet (U.S. terminology) stitch
- Check gauge at the end of rnd 3. At the end of rnd 3, the square should measure 3.5” x 3.5”. If you are not meeting this gauge at the end of rnd 3, start over with a smaller or larger hook size as needed to get gauge so that your final square will end up with a 9” square
- You can also adjust rnds 8 and 9 to use either sc or hdc in order to get a 9” square
