About the Inspiration for the Freida Cowl Pattern
The yarn was the inspiration for this design. When I visit a new town, I often like to check out the local yarn stores.
Recently I was visiting Kitty Hawk, North Carolina with my Mom. When I visited the Knitting Addiction store there, this was one of the first yarns I saw.
I loved the colors in it. And I thought the cotton acrylic blend would be perfect for a lightweight scarf or cowl.
Plus since it’s worsted weight, I was thinking it would work up quickly as well. So I couldn’t resist buying it.
After trying several stitches, the lacy stitch combo seemed perfect for showing off the colors while creating a lightweight texture. This stitch pattern combines simple stitches and is easy to learn.
I also wanted to make this a quick project with a simple design. The beautiful cowl is something you can make in a day. So it can be a last-minute gift or a project you can make one day and wear the next.
About the Yarn
Queensland Cairns comes in a range of beautiful multicolored skeins. It is made up of cotton and acrylic fibers in a tape construction.
This makes it a great choice for small home decor and accessory projects. The store where I bought it had a sample basket made in the yarn that was lovely.
It was super easy to work with and doesn’t split. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced crocheter, this is a fun yarn to try. The different colors found in each skein do all the color work for you!
You can also try to project in any worsted-weight yarn that you may have in your yarn stash. Save yourself the extra cost of buying new yarn and go “shopping” in your stash instead.
This is the kind of project you can try with a single skein of yarn that you might have left over. You can make the cowl as long as you have 170 yards left in a skein of worsted weight yarn.
Or you can combine partial skeins in several colors for a true stash busting project. If you want a colorful cowl, this particular design works well in blocks of color, stripes, or multicolored yarns.
